[Blindtlk] Job question.

Hey, Alan:

I think that your best bet on this matter of the job question is to focus
on the things that you can do well. Do not allow the interviewer to corral
you into discussing the things that are a probblem for you. Try to stick to
the positives.
Talk about your knowledge of the products. Talk about how much
information you can impart to the customer about the quality of the products
and how, because of this amazing quality, the product is such a fantastic
value.
Tell the interviewer about your abilities as a salesman and, if it is
necessary, then try to pursuade him to hire you for a trial period.
Challenge him to allow you the opportunity to prove yourself as a salesman
and an employee.
Explain to the interviewer that the visual perception of the product,
while important to the customer, is only a small fraction of the salesman's
consideration. The true focus of the salesman is making the sale and
knowledge of the product and your abilities as a sales agent are much more
vital to your profession. Explain that it is your job to gain the customers'
confidence and guide them through a world of jewelry that they are most
unfamiliar with. It is your job to make the customer understand that you
know about the jewelry that they are interested in and that the information
you give them is necessary to their ability to make a reasoned and informed
decision.
Explain to this interviewer that there are industries based entirely on
selling products to customers without visual investigation. Some companies
use telephone salesmen to call potential customers and sell them products
over the telephone. These salesmen have never seen these products and, for
that matter, neither have the customers but telemarketing is a multibillion
dollar business. There are other examples similar to this one and these are
the ideals that you need to have this interviewer focussed on. You need to
control the direction of the interview and you need to make sure that this
interviewer knows that visual attributes are only a very small part of the
task that you are being asked to perform. Make sure that he understands that
you can be effective at performing this task and, if you can get this point
across to him, then you have done nothing more than prove your skills as a
salesman and he will be chomping at the bit to hire you.

Good luck and keep us informed!

Subject: [Blindtlk] Job question.

I apologize for the cross-post, but I need some insight and I need it
quickly.

I am going in tomorrow afternoon to fill out a job application at a fairly
well known local jeweler. The thing is, I know the inevitable question will
be something along the lines of, "How can you sell something that you cannot
see, especially when being able to see the product is so important?"

To be honest, I'm not sure how to answer that. So, I came here, to my
federation family, to seek advice and insight. Can anyone help me with
this?

Eagerly awaiting any and all insight and help.

Alan
