It should also be mentioned that The R Consortium
(https://www.r-consortium.org/) may be able to help provide support
for a working group or an actual project on this topic. From their
website:

"The central mission of the R Consortium is to work with and provide
support to the R Foundation and to the key organizations developing,
maintaining, distributing and using R software through the
identification, development and implementation of infrastructure
projects."

They already support several projects
(https://www.r-consortium.org/projects/awarded-projects), e.g.
localization / translation, and workshops. They regular make calls
for proposals (https://www.r-consortium.org/projects/call-for-proposals),
but also simple wishlist suggestions
(https://github.com/RConsortium/wishlist/issues).

Personally I have little interest in using R Studio and doubt it would be of much juse to me, although having said that I haven't spent much time looking in to the exact feature set and so perhaps I'm being too quick to judge. It does sound as though it might be useful to those who are less strong in statistical areas though, and with the dubious accessibility of SPSS (and other packages), it would certainly be nice if there was one piece of software that worked out of the box.

I like not having to work around the R GUI or R Terminal accessibility issues, and also enjoy being able to source code straight from one buffer in to my R session. The idea of writing a more detailed blog post is a good one, I've recently acquired a blog and so I'll look in to doing this in due course.

I like my workarounds, but they have a steep learning curve that could be a barrier to someone thinking about a STEM career. I'd be happy to support anything that develops in that direction.

It will not happen quickly and it will not happen if only one or two of us ask - but maybe if a few of us make an appeal then we might be in a better position a few years from now.
