The portable navigation systems may be a good fit for you.  Also, if you're
a dog user, the school in Rochester Mi. offers a training package involving
a GPS. unit, Trekker, and the guide dog.  I know one person who's taken part
in that class and likes the combination.

It sounds like most of the issues you mention in connection with mobility
skills have to do with locating unfamiliar destinations.  Are you aware of
various GPS products you can use without sight?  They might solve a lot of
your difficulties.
