Hi Everett:
I use paratransit to get to and from work since there is a street with no
traffic lights that I would be required to cross to take the bus. I am
aware that some blind people are totally against using paratransit. I have
fairly good mobility skills, but feel paratransit is needed in cases where
the environment is unsafe, such as intersections with no stop lights.
Everyone must be honest with him/herself and be able to assess their own
needs. I personally would rather see a blind person with good or poor
mobility skills take paratransit to work than be unemployed.
Having made this controversial statement, you might want to consider
brushing up on your mobility skills if you feel uncomfortable traveling in
unfamiliar areas. Blind people are able to do this safely with good
mobility training and practice. I speak with personal experience on this
topic.
Thanks.
