Hi,
I did a few of these last year and found the m very rewarding.
The first point to make is that receptions like this matter, and firms at least in Ireland, put a lot of store by them.
So, while it may be superfluous to say it,
Dress right etc.
For myself, I think that its always good to go with a group of people, particularly if they're from your University and you know them.
That's what i'd do, even if they are going for the same jobs because:
1. it doesn't look good to be on your own for long at these gatherings
2. if they're going for the same jobs as you, they will target the people you want to talk to.
Don't rely on one person, that's unfair both to you and them, it makes you look less independent than you are and it probably impeeds their chances of getting a firm but mix with three or four or five people you know.
Noel's plan of hanging at the bar is a good one, unless they take you for an alko, lol!
