THE PAUL G. HEARNE AWARD FOR DISABILITY RIGHTS
The American Bar Association Commission on Mental and Physical
Disability Law is pleased to announce that nominations for the eighth
annual Paul G. Hearne Award for Disability Rights are now being
accepted. Each year, the Award is presented to an individual or an
organization that has performed exemplary service in furthering the
rights, dignity, and access to justice for people with disabilities.
The 2007 Award went to Laura Cooper Fenimore, a private practitioner who
specializes in long-term planning and insurance matters for people with
chronic illnesses. Past Award recipients include: Louise A. McKown
(disability rights advocate), The Honorable Judge Rhonda J. Brown (a
disability rights advocate and Review Judge,) Anil Lewis (a blind
advocate and assistant program counselor), Disability Rights Advocates
(DRA), Robert Perske (disability rights advocate), Stanley S. Herr
(professor, lawyer, and advocate), Marylou Breslin and the Disability
Rights Education and Defense Fund (DREDF), and James W. Ellis
(professor, lawyer, and advocate).
Please join us in recognizing outstanding public service to some of the
54 million Americans with disabilities. Paul G. Hearne was a
distinguished advocate for those Americans, so please help us to make
the Award recipient a truly distinguished individual or organization.
The recipient will be honored at the 2008 ABA Annual Meeting in New
York, NY in early August. Starbucks Coffee Company, the sponsor of the
Hearne Award, will give the recipient a $1,000 honorarium and pay for
the recipient's travel expenses to New York City.
