[blindlaw] 'environmental zelots'

Many people have opinions regarding the causes of global warning and the
extent to which the causes are natural or man made. Those are
interesting enough and will continue to be hotly debated. However, the
NFB simply wants to do all in its power to insure that blind people
receive the information we need to make the decisions necessary for safe
travel. We are not trying to slow down the growth of hybrid
technologies at all. We simply want to make certain that if vehicles
that are good for the environment are also extremely quiet, the
information we need will be made available. All should be on notice
that we will use every means at our disposal to assure that happens.

I have not seen all of the posts on this subject, but I hope it is clear
that the intention of most of us and the NFB is not to encourage the use
of gasoline-powered cars for our benefit. We are looking to find a
subtle sound source that could be added to hybrid cars if the cars
themselves are too silent. Not everything that is hybrid is quiet,
though. The hybrid busses that I have heard here in Minnesota are
quieter than most of the busses that travel our streets, but they make
enough noise to seem not to be a problem. Still, I would find it
surprising if the hybrid cars I have seen would not be seen as a problem
by the blind of Europe as well.
