Subject: Shortage of Mentors for ABA Commission on Mental and Physical
Disability Law
Dear colleagues,
As some of you may know the American Bar Association Commission on
Mental and Physical Disability Law has a Mentor Program for law students
and potential law students with disabilities.
We currently have a shortage of lawyers to serve as mentors, with record
numbers of mentees signing up each week. Basically, we are in great need
of mentors for an excellent program that helps out numerous students
with various types of disabilities. With a surprisingly low number of
law students and lawyers with disabilities in the legal profession
<http://maestro.abanet.org/trk/click?ref=zpqri74vj_3-5539x38094x15169&>
, this Program is of great importance to the profession and individuals
with disabilities.
Below is a short description of our Mentor Program, a link to a brochure
on the program, and a link to sign up as a mentor.
The Commission would appreciate any publicity you can give to the
Program, and urges you to pass this e-mail around to your colleagues
(e.g., forward it to individuals, forward it to e-mail lists, post the
info on your entity's website). We would like to point out that you do
not need need to have a disability to be a mentor. Of course, we will
not turn away any interested mentees you have in mind. More details are
found on our website.
Additionally, the Commission may be able to accommodate modest orders
for color copies of the brochure linked to below. Please contact me for
details.
If you have any ideas or methods for further advertising this program,
please do not hesitate to get in touch with me.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Best,
Bill Phelan
The Commission on Mental and Physical Disability Law's national Mentor
Program is a support service offered to help law students, potential law
students, and recent law school graduates, all with disabilities. We are
currently seeking to expand our pool of mentors. Support ranges from
advice on attaining accommodations to networking opportunities. Mentors
do not need to have a disability to participate-all that is needed is a
small amount of your time to help give assistance to a student with a
disability.
