The University of Washington School of Law seeks to hire an enthusiastic
and passionate Assistant Director/Career Coach for the Public Service
Program of the Center for Career Planning and Public Service (CCPPS).
As a full-time professional staff member of the UW School of Law CCPPS,
the Assistant Director will work to support, encourage, and educate
students in public service careers and will collaborate with other law
school offices on public service initiatives and programming and most
frequently with the Gates Public Service Law Scholarship Program and the
Public Service Externship Program. At times, this position may be
assigned to one of these programs on a project, time-limited basis.
The Assistant Director reports to the Assistant Dean for Career
Services. The Assistant Director will work closely with the Gates
Public Service Law Scholarship Program Executive Director and help
develop and support activities and events with this program. The
Assistant Director also works with faculty and staff to develop,
promote, and implement marketing and outreach activities designed to
increase employment opportunities for the schools' students and alumni.
Additionally, the person in this role will perform the following key
duties:
Direct all operations of the Public Service/Public Interest Program of
the CCPPS office. Set priorities and develops an annual work plan which
includes planning career events, public service career fairs, and making
outreach visits to employers for the purpose of increasing job
opportunities for students. Build and maintain relationships with
recurring and prospective employers in geographical areas targeted by
student interest, institutional reach, and institutional ambition.
Provide career counseling in public service law and mentoring to
students and alumni. Coordinate participation in job fairs, speaker
series, and other programs designed to provide information about public
service and public interest law careers. Coordinates student
participation at the Equal Justice Works Career Fair and the Northwest
Public Service Career Fair.
Oversee and direct the Olympia Quarter Fellows Program.
Increase public service employment and fellowship opportunities for
third year J.D. students and graduating LL.M. students.
Work in conjunction with the Faculty Manager of the Public
Service/Public Interest Externship Program to facilitate externships and
to monitor externs.
Complete the annual Equal Justice Works Survey. Assist in the
collection of statistical data on law students' employment, including
surveys, periodic reports; analyze data and reports results to
constituents as it pertains to the Public Service/Public Interest
Program.
In conjunction with other CCPPS staff, develop, administer and monitor
an annual budget for the Public Service/Public Interest Programs of
CCPPS.
Together with other CCPPS staff, represent the School of Law in
professional organizations and committees such as the National
Association for Law Placement (NALP), and various local, state and
national bar associations and legal organizations.
Serve as a liaison to the Washington State Bar Association and to the
Washington State Access to Justice Board.
Assist Law School Admissions Office by advising prospective applicants
about employment opportunities.
Develop working relationships with varied student groups and the Law
School's Student Bar Association (SBA); informs classes and
organizations about special programs and provides information about
public service events and activities.
May attend faculty, departmental and administrative meetings to provide
and/or obtain information relating to student services, policies and
procedures. Attends law and university functions, including receptions,
ceremonies and other public service related activities in the life of
the Law School.
Co-supervise one full-time Program Coordinator.
Competitive candidates will possess excellent written and oral
communication skills, excellent judgment, group presentation skills, and
the ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with
students, employers, alumni, faculty and staff. Inherent to success in
this position is the ability to assess needs, to conceive and
successfully implement programs to meet those needs and adjust to
changing needs.

Requirements:
J.D. degree, preferably with career counseling experience.
Candidates with Master's degrees in counseling and substantial
experience in career placement and counseling will be considered.
A minimum of three years experience in public interest/public service
programs or the equivalent.
A minimum of two years in law or related field placement, preferably in
a major university setting, or two years of experience in student
services, a university career services office, or a related field.
Working knowledge of IBM PC, word processing and database management
systems.
Prior supervisory experience in a professional setting.
Demonstrated leadership abilities.
Good knowledge of job markets, employment trends and job requirements;
interviewing methods; hiring practices; and Equal Employment
Opportunity/Affirmative Action requirements.
Previous work in a law setting or law-related work in public
interest/public service.
Considerable knowledge of law and law-related employment opportunities
on a regional and national level.
Ability to interact with tact and diplomacy with both Law School and
legal communities.
Demonstrated experience in prioritizing the use of limited personnel and
fiscal resources. Ability to use Microsoft Office and Microsoft Access
databases.

Evidence of creativity in developing programs and services.
Previous work in a law setting or law-related work in public
service/public interest.
Previous work with law students and law school programs.
Considerable knowledge of law and law-related employment opportunities
on a regional and national level.
Strong desire to serve in higher education and to advise students.

the Law School community and legal community.
