I used to carry a knife but I find the pockets in my clothes last long when
I don't.

In NC, there is a statute against carrying such weaponry.

block quote
It shall be unlawful for any person willfully and intentionally to carry
concealed about his person any bowie knife, dirk, dagger, slung shot, loaded
cane, metallic knuckles, razor, shurikin, stun gun, or other deadly weapon
of like kind, except when the person is on the person's own premises.

A useful website is: www.packing.org

I have carried a knife since being a Cub Scout. It's habit. I've never
used it as a weapon. Now, being an attorney, I can not carry one into the
courthouses, and easily forget I have one on me. Compounding the issue is
taking public transportation prevents me from running back out to the car to
put the knife away.

Supposedly, you are allowed a folding pocket knife under a certain blade
length, but the security often confiscates them anyway. I thought about
getting a miniture swiss army knife just to have something to open nabs
with, buying them by the dozen, and if they are taken, who cares.

I thought about modifying a white can for self defense, not with a knife,
but with a retractible club, like what the law enforcement carry. I would
attach the appropriate length of cane to the end of the club and leave it
loose enough to break away should the appropriate scenario arise.
