	Job Summary: 
	The Research Attorney provides advanced research and writing
services to assistant federal defender (AFD) staff on trial and
appellate cases. The individual in this position must be an attorney.
The Research Attorney writes briefs, motions, petitions for certiorari,
and legal memoranda for review by the Defender and staff attorneys. The
Research Attorney does not ordinarily sign pleadings or make court
appearances.


	Key Requirements: 

		*	excellent writing and analytical skills 
		*	high degree of computer literacy 
		*	excellent interpersonal communication skills 

	Major Duties: 
	Assists the assigned attorney in the preparation of motions and
briefs for review and signature by the responsible case attorney for
filing in federal magistrate, district, and appellate courts. Also
assists in the preparation of petitions for certiorari.

	Assists the assigned attorney in the preparation of legal
memoranda for review and signature by the Defender and staff attorneys.
Assists in the preparation of jurisdictional statements, review of
issues, comprehensive statements of relevant facts, standards of review,
and briefs complex legal and factual arguments. Advises the responsible
attorney regarding all issues relevant to the case.

	Performs legal research utilizing all available resources
including computer-assisted legal research tools. Research includes
state and federal statutes, case law, regulations, precedents, treaties,
sentencing guidelines, and related subject matter.

	Updates research in preparation for oral argument by the
responsible attorney. Consults with the attorney regarding the priority
of issues and difficulties of the case.

	Performs all other duties as assigned. 
	Qualifications: You must possess a year of general work
experience that shows your ability to perform progressively more
complex, responsible, or difficult duties; and that shows your ability
to learn the specific work of this job.
	
	You must have one year of specialized experience at a level
close to the work of this job that has given you the particular
knowledge, skills, and abilities required to successfully perform.
Typically we would find this experience in work within this field or a
field that is closely related. To qualify, an applicant must be a law
school graduate who has been admitted to and is in good standing before
a state bar, with at least two years of legal experience.
