Hi Craig and Albert,
Thanks for the comments on my KNFB Reader podcast. I've found it very helpful in classroom situations when I'm given a handout. I had one professor last semester who never could remember to email me his handouts. Since I had the
Reader, I just stopped asking after a while. I was still able to follow what was happening in class. This could definitely be useful when you need to quickly review documents. I don't use it every day in class, but when I need it, it's truly
wonderful.
Re: K1000. I don't have K1000, but I believe Dennis Clark has both programs. Maybe he or Sarah could comment on the differences.
Someone (can't remember who, sorry) pointed out that if you only need OCR capabilities, ABBYY is probably your best bet. If you need the special features of Kurzweil, then it becomes a good choice. ABBYY also costs about half as
much as Kurzweil. It is very accessible with JAWS, and the scans are absolutely superb.
I use ABBYY Finereader and my fujitsu scanner to scan all of my books for class. I can read pages and pages of my casebooks without finding a single error. I have also scanned a book with parts of the tax code for my federal income
tax class. I can very quickly find the section my professor refers to because the OCR was so good. I figured out that if I typed the section number followed by a period, it would most likely take me straight to the beginning of the section. I
use a braille display in class, and this makes it very easy to follow along when the professor asks us to turn to a particular section in the code. (Actually, I have two copies of this book. After I had scanned it, the bookstore somehow got
a pdf of the book, and I ran this through ABBYY and converted it to a Word file.)
Hope this info is helpful.
