[blindlaw] bulk scanners

Since the K1000 program uses Abby as one of its OCR. packages, how could
this be accurate?  It also uses Scansoft's OCR. program so you have choices.
I'm not blindly loyal to the folks at Kurzweil  but it seems the word
processing, format conversion, and note taking features would make it a more
blind user friendly package.

Well it would depend on how accurate you'd like your scanning and how much
work you'd be willing to do to fix the errors.
We have compared Abbyy, Kursweil and OmniPage on the same book (on numerous
occasions), giving each of them a chance individually to recognize the same
text.  Abbyy did a much better job, with far fewer errors than any of the
others.  OmniPage is a good program too, but in our experience Abby has
consistently performed better.
