[blindlaw] bulk scanners

Joe,
You are correct. A duplex scanner can feed a page in and scan both sides at
once. Generally, most duplex scanners have a much larger document feeder
capacity so that you can put the entire book on the scanner and it will scan
it page by page. The beauty of the most recent Fujitsu scanners is that they
have a nifty feature that detects when two pages have been fed in at once.
If this happens, the scanner will stop until you remedy the problem and then
continue scanning. This is great when you're scanning large books.
I have done a great deal of research on OCR and the ABYY FineReader
character recognition is the best. It does a better job than Kurzweil 1000
and is less prone to crashing. I know that I have trouble with K1000
crashing when I am scanning large amounts of material. Oddly, the Kurzweil
3000 software used by many DSS offices seems to do a better job at OCR than
Kurzweil 1000. To my knowledge, the only difference between K1000 and K3000
is that K1000 was designed specifically for blind folks while K3000 is
targeted toward DSS offices and folks with learning disabilities.
Nevertheless, it seems like K3000 has better OCR software. It could be that
the scanner they use at my university is much better than mine and that is
why K3000 seems to work better than my own scanner and K1000. In any case, I
think ABYY FineReader bests them all.

My ignorance is going to show prominently, but can someone describe the
characteristics of a duplex scanner? Currently, I have a Cannon flatbed
LiDe something or other. I scan pages one at a time, rather slow, but this
duplex business leads me to believe the scanner can feed paper through and
scan both sides? Thanks in advance for the clarification.
