Subject: [Nfb-web] Nick Schmittroth


     This is a short note to let you know that Nick Schmittroth 
passed away this morning, Friday, October 6, 2006.  Nick and his 
wife, Tai, were dedicated members of the National Federation of the 
Blind.  Nick was serving as the Salt Lake City Chapter President and 
was on the Board of Directors of the NFB of Utah.  He enjoyed his 
profession, which was teaching orientation and mobility to other 
blind people.  At the time of his passing, he was at home with his 
wife, Tai.  She said that he passed away very peacefully.  Nick had 
spoken on the phone and visited personally with many friends as 
recently as this week.  He remained very alert and very 
conversational clear to the end.
     Nick had battled melanoma for the last eight months and worked 
as hard as he could with treatments.  Hospice then came into his home 
to help him be more comfortable.  Tai wants everyone to know that 
Nick appreciated the calls and emails that he received.  Funeral 
arrangements are being made and more details will be sent as soon as 
they are known.  The funeral will probably be Wednesday or Thursday 
(October 11 or 12) of next week in Salt Lake City.  Information about 
flowers or donations will also be sent later.
     Nick will be greatly missed by his family and friends across the 
country.
