EMPLOYMENT BULLETIN

MUNICIPAL COURT CHIEF BAILIFF
Annual Salary Range:  $44,454 to $49,841


The Municipal Court of Seattle, the highest volume, limited jurisdiction
court in the State, is accepting applications for the position of Chief
Bailiff.  The Court has a total of 13 Judicial Officers including, at
this time, eight Judges, one Court Commissioner, and four Magistrates.
The Chief Bailiff position is an exempt position, but non-exempt from
overtime, and reports directly to the Presiding Judge and/or his
designee (usually the Bailiff Judge).  In addition, the Chief Bailiff is
responsible to all the Judges of the Municipal Court of Seattle. 

PRIMARY DUTIES: Successful applicants will supervise and train all
full-time and intermittent Bailiffs.  Candidates must be customer
service oriented, have strong interpersonal skills, management skills,
be knowledgeable about court systems, rules and procedures, and be
highly motivated.  The Chief Bailiff will plan and direct all
work-related activities of all full-time and intermittent Bailiffs,
which will include but is not limited to: coaching and developing
performance improvements plans, development of annual training plan and
conducting on-the-job training; will recruit and schedule relief
Bailiffs to cover sick leave, vacation and other time-off requests from
Bailiffs; at the direction of the appointing Judge, Presiding Judge or
designee, will evaluate and document the work performance of all
Bailiffs, and report serious issues to that Bailiff's Judge and/or the
Presiding Judge or designee.  Additional management responsibilities
require the Chief Bailiff to meet with division managers, judges,
members of the public, and attorneys on program development and
operational implementation issues.  Formulate annual budget proposal for
the Bailiff division, provide monthly reports and take actions necessary
to stay within budget.  The Chief Bailiff will also perform, when
needed, in-courtroom duties of a Bailiff such as handling jurors,
maintaining control of evidence, preparing proper documentation and
forms, transporting in-custody defendants, and maintaining order and
control in the courtroom.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: This position requires a Bachelor's degree in
criminal justice, law, or related field (a combination of education and
experience may substitute for education).  Also requires a working
knowledge of court rules and municipal court procedures, as well as
working knowledge of the criminal justice system.  Proficient knowledge
and use of Excel, Word, MCIS, JAMMA, DISCIS, SCOMIS, WACIC and other
related computer programs is required.  Candidates must be at least 21
years of age, and have a valid Washington State Driver's License.  This
position works primarily at the Seattle Municipal Court at 600 Fifth
Ave, and may involve some occasional evening work.  Successful candidate
must pass a criminal background check. 

In additional to the above qualifications, the successful candidate
should also have previous relevant supervisory experience within a court
system.
