Hi Holly and list, Ken here got in touch with Joe cutter the Fred schroder
award winner who has written a book, maybe you heard him speak at national, but
he's been doing it in NJ for a long time. Here's his reply to my question.
Hi Ken, thanks for the inquiry about wheel chair use.
I have had experience with children and adults using a
wheel chair. The travelers have a more efficient time
of it if it is powered, leaving the other hand free to
hold a cane. A one wheel drive, manually driven places
the traveler at a disadvantage, I think. Yes, the cane
needs to be longer. I was educated about lengths of
canes by a wheel chair user. The length is determined
so that when sitting in the chair and holding onto the
cane in the preferred hand/arm position, that the cane
can reach over a curb and touch the street and when
unexpectedly coming up to stairs the cane is long
enough to go over to the next step giving the traveler
enough reaction time. So the length of the cane is
determined by these travel situations and NOT the
height of the person. So, travel cane in one hand and
powered driven by the other hand-that is how it is
done. Have a happy Thanksgiving, Joe
