[Blind-rollers] sensorsRe: Blind-rollers Digest, Vol 2, Issue 11

Hi -- I tried one of those prox sensors on my chair in the 90s and it was
for me useless. For example, it was supposed to emit a low pitched hum when
I was approaching a dropoff, but it didn't do this until I was just a couple
of inches from the step down, so I would still have to depend on my chair.
Perhaps they have been improved over the years, but I think nothing beats a
cane, especially in unfamiliar territory.
It was kind of funny (albeit not at the time) but my employer got me that
sensor not for the stairways that I couldn't see, but to try and solve a
collision problem I was having with an ambulatory blind employee that for
some reason always collided with me on the way to lunch. I would be
speeding along in my chair and she would be going the opposite direction,
and crash... I always apologized but she was afraid of getting hurt and
escalated the matter to our respective supervisors, who took it to the AA
office and they went and got sensors for her cane and my wheelchair. They
were worthless for both of us, but neither of us could complain at the risk
of looking uncooperative. So we tried them a couple weeks anyway. The
matter was finally resolved by mapping out alternative routes for both of us
so we wouldn't collide. The simplest solutions are always the best.
Cheers all.

Hi everybody
Have a good one Dan , what ever it is your doing . I have another question
for you all. My OT. is trying to convince me that I should have proximity
sensors installed on my chair. Do any of you have any experience with these
sensors. I have looked into them and they can't be purchased in Canada but
there are several U.S companies offering varying types. I really am not
sure whether I want to trust some electronic gismo over my cane or even in
addition to my cane. My cane and I have a very trusting relationship if
you know what I mean.
Marcel
