Description
This one-day workshop focuses on developing blind children's
understanding of spatial concepts and increasing their confidence with
braille and tactile illustrations. On the basis that effective learning
involves direct experience, a set of tactile activity kits will be
presented. These involve carefully selected educational toys, real
objects and models which inspire young blind learners to engage in
activities such as counting, sorting, building, transforming, copying,
comparing size, shape and location of objects. All activities are linked
with appropriate exercises in English braille.
Aims
1. To raise awareness of the difficulties which totally blind learners
experience with tactile graphics.
2. To help teachers and parents design educational activities involving
Braille and tactile graphics which will be both meaningful and enjoyable
for young totally blind learners.
3. To acquaint teachers with simple tools and techniques which promote
spatial understanding across the curriculum.
4. To show how “ordinary” toys can be used as effective educational tools.
