Dear All,
I am Head of Information & Communication Technology at school in Leicester,
UK, and also run the
website http://www.blindnessandarts.com. Although my research interests
previously have been purely related to the fine arts, crafts and design, I am
currently organizing an independent research project entitled COMBINE
(computing & blindness in education) to research the link between
non-visual logic and language, and more particularly non-visual
conceptualization of visual programming languages (such as Visual Basic, Visual
C and their more immature .net offspring). Its aims are:
To further an understanding
of blindness and computingTo take the first steps
towards a model of non-visual computer interfacesTo take the first steps
towards a model of non-visual computing semanticsTo add to the debate on
logic and language as a whole
This research is not currently funded or conducted under the
auspices of a university or research organization. I am the only researcher
currently involved, and the resources are my own. However, as I develop my
initial findings I hope to produce partnerships with renowned researchers, who
may be able to take this project to the next level.
The field methodology for this research is purely extended questionnaire based
interviews, similar to those I conducted in my previous research on blindness
and the arts. I am looking for people who are late blind, early blind and those
born blind and can program computers (in any language, not just visual
languages) or who are currently learning to program computers to participate in
these interviews. You do not need to be a specific age - indeed the broader the
age range the better -, social background or gender, as this social research
wishes to encompass as broad a spectrum as possible. Your anonymity is
guaranteed!
If you are interested in this project, please email me at
the address provided.
Sincere best wishes,
Dr. Simon Hayhoe
