Excellence In Teaching: Part 2

It is a story 30 years in the making.

A South Bend woman wanted to thank her high school teacher for changing her 
life.

The catch, she graduated in 1978.

Laurie Wenger loves her job at Notre Dame.

She paints signs free-hand, a lettering skill she picked up in high school.

She went to South Bend Central when it was a career center and always looked 
forward to her commercial arts class led by Floyd Kuzan.

Laurie known back then as Laurie Klingler, she wrote to us wanting to thank 
Mr. Kuzan after all these years.

So, Trisha tracked him down to his home in Mishawaka, where he still lives 
with his wife of 60 years.

He is 85 now, but he still remembers the good times and good students like 
Laurie.

And what a story it is, Floyd Kuzan spent 33 years as a teacher.

It was a profession he chose while he was in the service.

Commercial arts involved lettering, layout, and design the old fashioned way 
of course.

Kuzan's class was recommended to Laurie.

It was a whole new world for a young woman who was born visually impaired.

Her vision and multiple Scleroses have never held her back.

She excelled and soon after graduating she got a job at Notre Dame, painting 
her share of footballs and signs.

Then came a request from then coach Lou Holtz, a request that would change 
her life.

History made possible by Laurie's favorite teacher, Floyd Kuzan.

Since Laurie owns the trademark to "Play Like a Champion Today," she 
presented Mr. Kuzan with his very own sign.
