"Sounding Architecture" collaboration to be unveiled at the Serpentine
Gallery

EXTRACT: THERE HAVE been several exhibitions, of sculpture particularly,
aimed at a blind audience. I remember one at the Tate that included a
lifesize, relatively naturalistic bronze of a dog by Elisabeth Frink.

Now a "sound work" will be unveiled at the Serpentine Gallery on Saturday as
the centrepiece of a project called Sounding Architecture, a collaboration
with 18 visually impaired and sighted participants by artists Kaffe
Matthews, who works in sound, and Lynn Cox, which investigated how those
denied full visual perceptions experience architectural space and
environment. The results will also form the basis of a one-day seminar,
significantly entitled Sensual Clues, in the autumn; the present event is
more of a working document and is, as far as I know, the first to address
architecture specifically in terms of visual impairment.

Sound artist Kaffe Matthews and artist Lynn Cox have been working with
visually impaired adults, exploring non-visual perceptions of architectural
space and the environment. The results will form the basis of a one-day
seminar, Sensual Clues, during autumn 2005.

A collaborative project between the Serpentine Gallery, Shape and Art
Through Touch.
