Growing up in the eighties and being crazy about art, I wish, that there
were tactile museums. Sigh, but now their are, and I appreciate them even
more because I can't see as well as I did back then.

Castle Park Arts Centre's Touching Display

CASTLE Park Arts Centre in Frod-sham now has a corner in its Jim Cox Gallery
devoted to exhibits which can be explored with touch: Art with Feeling.

This new feature will contain works of art accessible to visually impaired
visitors to the centre and so enrich their experience. There is also a
tactile map of the building available.

Few galleries have works of art that can be freely explored by touch and
Castle Park Arts Centre is probably the first small gallery in the country
to be presenting a changing exhibition of tactile art. Each item on display
will be described in large print and Braille formats.

This month, the centre is mounting an exhibition of work by the pupils of
Sir John Deane's College in Northwich, and the students will show a
specifically designed tactile work.

Future exhibits this year will include a sculpture by Tony Evans, a lace
pillow set up by the North Cheshire Lace-makers' Group so that everyone can
try their hand at bobbin lace making, and a tactile textured collage by Liz
Rowley.

More information about this ground-breaking addition to the attractions of
Castle Park Arts Centre can be supplied by the centre.
