Imagineering Our Future
Issue 2
March 7, 2008
Message from the Executive Director
At the NFB Jernigan Institute we work on creating new opportunities by
innovating new model education, technologies, products, and services
based on the dreams of the blind. In essence, we find examples
of excellence and help get them disseminated more broadly or we create
excellence where it does not currently exist. In this issue of
Imagineering Our Future, we are highlighting an important new program
being undertaken by the National Federation of the Blind
to recognize and further excellence--the Dr. Jacob Bolotin Award
Program
http://www.marchforindependence.org/site/R?i=EXm4sFrFHQ8KOyygrhOefw..
The new award program, and the fact that the annual March Madness is
around the corner, brings to mind a quote by basketball coach Rick
Pitino regarding excellence. He is credited as saying,
"Excellence is the unlimited ability to improve the quality of
what you have to offer." At the NFB Jernigan Institute, we
are doing something in a way that no other organization is
doing--taking the experience of the blind themselves and turning
it into excellence.
Frequently, attempts to create excellence in programs for blind people
are made without consideration or input from the blind
themselves. Furthermore, great energy is frequently spent
devising solutions to problems that are not truly problems for the
blind but merely misconceptions about blindness. Through the
Jernigan Institute, through the National Federation of the Blind, we
are harnessing unlimited abilities and creating opportunities by
building on the experience of the blind--the excellence that the blind
have been building for themselves since 1940.
Thank you to our partners and supporters who work closely with us to
create excellence.

The 2008 National Federation of the Blind Transition to Independence
Career Fair, held at the National Federation of the Blind Jernigan
Institute on February 21, 2008, was a rousing success. In spite
of the inclement weather, ninety-three students, teachers, and parents
attended the event. Attendees participated in workshops focusing
on subjects including how to make a good first impression, why
training centers are important, and how to advocate for oneself.

the new NASA book she co-authored, which combines large print,

In our research and training institute we intend to undertake programs
that will challenge the assumptions that others have about us and
sometimes challenge those we have about ourselves. Sometimes we engage
in adventure; sometimes we climb the highest peaks; sometimes we scale
the ivory towers of academe; and sometimes we apply our inventive
imagination to the everyday problems confronting us all. If we expect
the blind to achieve in ways defined by the most exalted standards, we
must demand excellence. Those who believe the blind have little
capability expect little, and they get it. However, this is not our
approach.
