[Arizona-students] Water Park Outing!

Hi all,

As I see it, the main purpose of going to the water park as a
division is to have fun and socialize. A side effect of going there is that
the public will learn about us and our organization as well as our ability
to participate fully in society. I
Don't think that educating is usually the primary goal, unless we're doing
something specific like talking about Braille or blindness at a school.

Also, don't forget that we can educate our members and help them to
build up their confidence and skills through events like a water park day. I
myself have never been to a water park without being in the company of at
least one fully sighted person, and so I'm not sure what the best techniques
are for getting around such a place without vision. I trust that it can be
done because I know that our training centers routinely sponsor these kinds
of outings. But I'll be learning a lot from the rest of you about exactly
how it's done.

When we go to the water park it's not going to be a spectacle. We're
just going to enjoy the rides and the wave pool like everybody else.

Although we have decided to hold the AABS-sponsored water park day
on the same day as the other state divisions, if a few of us want to go to
Big Surf next month as an informal outing, we certainly can do that.

Cheers
Arielle

Hi Gabe,

Though I certainly do believe it is critical that we educate the public, I
also agree with you that we shouldn't, in most cases, go out of our way to
do so. Let's just get the job done through living by example. Let's not
make a public spectacle of it.

Instead, my friends, let's evangelize for the equal accessibility and
reasonable accomodation we must be granted in order to be afforded the
opportunity to fully participate in society.
