Subject: [nabs-l] Cool Summer Opportunities
Hey Guys,
I just wanted to let all of you know about two awesome opportunities to do
something cool this summer. Last summer, I went to Peru with a group of
blind and sighted students to hike and camp in the Andes and to visit Incan
ruins including the famous Machu Picchu. We also got to do a community
service project in a small, remote village in the mountains with some local
children. The trip was set up by an organization called Global Explorers
that takes high school students all over the world. One of our trip leaders
was Erik Weihenmayer, the blind man who climbed Mt. Everest. It was an
absolutely amazing trip, and I'll never forget the friends I made, the
experiences I gained, and the culture I observed.
Global Explorers is sponsoring two more trips this summer focused toward the
involvement of blind students: one called Leading the Way, and one called
Sounds of the Amazon. Leading the Way will be another hiking trip in Peru,
although I'm pretty sure it's in a different area then I was. Erik
Weihenmayer will also be traveling with this group of students. If it's
anything like the trip I went on, it'll be a bit physically demanding but
worth every minute. You'll probably be hiking over some seriously rough
terrain for several hours a day, but they'll throw in some sight-seeing
stuff to balance it out. Also, Sounds of the Amazon will take a group of
students to the Peruvian rainforest to explore the culture and wildlife of
the area with an emphasis on nonvisual observation techniques. I would
strongly recommend any of these trips. The people at Global Explorers are
amazing, and they'll make sure to give you a hands-on and exciting
adventure. It does require a bit of a time commitment beforehand for
fundraising and other preparations. You can find more information on their
website at: www.globalexplorers.org.
Thanks, and I hope you are all having a fantastic year.
Alysha
