Hello everyone,

As you all know, the National Federation of the Blind of Arizona's annual convention is coming up! Sessions start on Friday, Sept. 15, and the convention adjourns at noon on Sunday, Sept. 17. The convention will be held at the Holiday Inn Palo Verde Hotel in Tucson, AZ. If you live in the Phoenix area, buses will be departing on Thursday afternoon and returning on Sunday afternoon (call me for details). There is still hotel room space with other students, so if you want to join us, call me at
602-502-2255

On Friday afternoon (Sept. 15), the Arizona Association of Blind Students will have a seminar at the convention hotel from 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The seminar is titled "Continuing the Quest for Empowerment", and highlights include a presentation from the national Educational Testing Service, a panel discussion of ways to work in collaboration with professors and DSS offices to succeed in college, and a short talk given by our national NFB president, Dr. Marc Maurer. Even if you can't attend the full convention, we hope you will join us at our seminar. Also, please spread the word to all the blind students, and professionals working with blind students, that you know.

On Saturday, Sept. 16, from noon to 2:00 p.m. we will have our annual AABS business meeting, where we will discuss goals for next year, elect officers, pass any constitutional amendments, and collect dues for the upcoming year. We appreciate all of your input at these business meetings, as it helps us plan activities that truly benefit our members and the community. If you want to vote in the elections or run for an office, please be sure your dues are paid, and if they are not, you can pay your $5.00 dues at our Friday afternoon seminar.

Finally, throughout our state convention we will be selling raffle tickets for a Victor Vibe, a digital CD player designed to play DAISY books. The Vibe is specially keyed to play digital books borrowed from Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic (RFBD). I myself just began using a Vibe, and I have found it to be much, much more convenient and user-friendly than the old analog cassettes. Raffle tickets for the Vibe cost $2.00 and will be available from AABS board members throughout convention. The winning name will be drawn on Sunday morning, Sept. 17.

Hope to see you all at convention!

Regards,
Arielle Silverman
