Dear AABS members,
As you know, last week I submitted forms to the Arizona State University Student Organization Resource Center requesting that the AABS become registered on ASU's campus. Today I searched the ASU Web site and discovered that the Arizona Association of Blind Students of ASU is listed as a registered organization! I have not heard directly from the ASU SORC, but I am fairly certain that we were approved as a registered ASU club! This is a major milestone for the AABS, and I would like to thank all who supplied their ASU ID's and agreed to become members.
I will update everyone again when I speak with our adviser (Dr. Jane Maienschein in the biology and society department) about what we can do as a student organization. From what I have read so far, we should be able to reserve meeting spaces on campus for statewide AABS seminars and also for fund-raising and blindness awareness projects. We will be able to set up a table in the middle of campus either occasionally or on a permanent basis to pass out literature and familiarize ASU students with blindness. We are also eligible to apply for grants of up to $1000 per academic year from the Associated Students of ASU for on-campus projects.
Congratulations to all our members for helping us to branch out and be in a place where we can improve policies and opportunities for blind students at ASU and hopefully throughout the state.
Arielle Silverman
