Hello, list. At yesterday's AABS seminar, we emphasized the importance of being able to communicate with professors and gain access to required texts without relying on the school's DSS office. I have gotten into the practice of emailing all of my prospective professors as soon as I register for their class to introduce myself and obtain the names of required texts. This has worked well, and I have been able to research the availability of my books in accessible format without waiting for the DSS office to do it.

Since I am about to send off another round of letters to my summer and fall professors, I thought that I would share the standard template of my letter with all of you. This is just one example that may not be the best for everyone, but it should get you thinking about how to structure your introductory notes to your professors.

Dear Prof. (last name),

My name is Arielle Silverman and I am a biology and psychology major enrolled in your (name of class) course for next semester. I am a blind
student
who uses Braille, electronic text, and cassettes to access class materials. I was wondering if you know the titles of the texts that we will be using so that I may request them in an accessible format
from DRS or another library. Is the bookstore's listing accurate? Thanks in advance for your help.
By the way, I use a Braille laptop and a standard PC with speech for writing, so I should not need any other accommodations for this class. I look forward
to beginning your class.
