REHABILITATION TEACHER FOR THE BLIND III
(COMMUNICATION SKILLS INSTRUCTOR)
Full-time, civil service position
Immediate vacancy on the island of Oahu (Nuuanu)
$2,886.00 per month
(plus full State employment benefit package)
This position is responsible for assessing the need for and providing individual and group instruction in communication skills as part of a professional team in a day rehabilitation center setting to assist and support Counseling staff in preparing individuals who are blind, visually impaired or deaf-blind for employment, and to provide consultation and technical assistance to other branches, individuals and organizations who work with individuals with these disabilities.  Duties also include developing and implementing an individual written service plan for each trainee; preparing evaluation, progress and closure reports; maintaining attendance list, activity plans and individual records of service; and submitting reports on program accomplishments.

Education Requirement:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with emphasis in the fields of education, home economics, therapy, rehabilitation or the behavioral sciences.

General Experience Requirement:

  One (1) year of progressively responsible professional work with persons with disabilities in counseling, home management, therapy, teaching, social work, or related fields.

Specialized Experience

Requirement:

  One (1) year of progressively responsible work experience in a program of training individuals who are blind or visually impaired in personal and home management skills and techniques in the several primary areas of daily living which provided the applicants with knowledge of methods and techniques used in teaching communication skills to individuals who are blind; counseling individuals who are blind or visually impaired in classroom and home settings in regards to emotional and physical adjustment and individual development; home economics; anatomy and physiology of the eye; community resources and educational  psychology.

Substitutions Allowed:

Professional work experience within the areas prescribed under General Experience may be substituted for  education on a year-for-year basis.   Successful completion of a master’s degree from an accredited college or university in education, home economics, therapy, rehabilitation or the behavioral sciences may be substituted for one (1) year of General Experience.  Successful completion of all requirements for a master’s degree in Home Teaching for the blind may be substituted for one (1) year of General Experience and one (1) year of Specialized Experience.
