[Ag-eq] Animal Identification

Not a "dumb one." For two years now we identify the ram with a bell so he
can't sneak up on us. But what I'm looking for are permanent identification
systems for each animal.

Maybe I'm not understanding the problem, but, if you're trying to identify
an animal who needs ongoing treatment, could you put a bell on that animal?
If you had a few animals needing different things, you could put different
sounding bells.  Just a thought. Sorry if it's a dumb one.

Hello all, 

 

I was wondering if anyone had some experience with low or high tech animal
identification systems. My farm has approximately 200 head dairy cattle,
(adults and replacements), a 20 head beef herd, and a 20-30 head sheep
flock. One of my challenges has been that I've never been able to identify
animals for treatments, even though over the years I've proven one of the
better laborers at spotting things. 

 

I know with radio frequency identification tags you can get information to
be sent to a smart phone, but there's more than one system out there and I
wondered if someone was using one. Other suggestions, perhaps less high tech
would be welcome too.
