Hi Tracy, and all,
I have done aquaponics.  It's like hydroponics, except that you grow 
the plants on top of tanks or ponds with fish.  You feed the fish, 
the fish  give off nitrogenous waste that the plants use to 
grow.  You are mimicking a natural pond.  The system tries to balance 
itself, and the secret is flushing out some of the old water, and 
adding new water on a schedule.  The flushed-out water is good for 
watering other plants.
One buddy was growing Basil year-round to supply a health food 
store.  He lived in Michigan.  He did that for a few years, then 
moved to South Carolina for less snow and more sun.
