Hi Tracy, and all,
I have done aquaponics. It's like hydroponics, except that you grow
the plants on top of tanks or ponds with fish. You feed the fish,
the fish give off nitrogenous waste that the plants use to
grow. You are mimicking a natural pond. The system tries to balance
itself, and the secret is flushing out some of the old water, and
adding new water on a schedule. The flushed-out water is good for
watering other plants.
One buddy was growing Basil year-round to supply a health food
store. He lived in Michigan. He did that for a few years, then
moved to South Carolina for less snow and more sun.
