Dear Customers,

Welcome to the latest edition of the Blazie Engineering catalog. Each
fall when I sit down to write this letter, I think about you, the
customer. I think about how I talked to many of you throughout the past
year at conferences and seminars. These "chance" conversations with you
are precious, because you give me helpful feedback about the job we're
doing here.

So, I want to say "thanks" to all the folks across North America who
have been generous enough to talk to us telling us what kind of
products you like to use; what your adaptive technology needs are. We've
thoughtfully researched the following software, hardware and other
components with your opinions in mind. I hope we've come close to your
ideal product line-up.

Much exciting product development occurred last year, and we are pleased
to offer absolutely the freshest items right here. For example, if you
work with math at all, be sure to check out the new Nemeth translators
from Duxbury Systems and Raised Dot Computing!

Remember, Blazie Engineering's commitment is to its customers.
Everything we sell, be it a new product or an "old faithful" comes
with a 30-day money-back guarantee, because you should be truly
satisfied with your purchase.

If you are searching for something in particular and don't find it here,
please contact us. In the meantime, thank you for taking the time to
read through this catalog and consider our products.

Sincerely,

Deane B. Blazie
President

Blazie Engineering Presents
the SERIES 2000 notetakers

Braille 'n Speak 2000 Braille Lite 2000 Type 'n Speak 2000

"Series 2000" is the name given to the latest versions of the famous
Braille 'n Speak, Braille Lite 18 and Type 'n Speak talking notetakers.
Series 2000 machines are supercharged with unparalleled features, enough
to fuel you into the 21st century.

These stand-alone, feather-light talking notetakers can be thought of as
"word-processors-plus." But we caution you, the emphasis here is
definitely on the PLUS.

Read on to find out why Blazie notetakers have grown in popularity and
reputation since the first Braille 'n Speak was introduced over 10 years
ago!

With the latest memory technology available, you can write, review and
edit data, keep a virtual address book, and store many, many pages of
Braille or print. In fact, if you were to completely fill your Series
2000 machine with files, it would contain more than 780 single-spaced,
typewritten print pages of solid text. You get 768k RAM!

Additionally, a 2mb flash ROM storage area means lots of room for
external programs and other such files that won't be altered on a
regular basis (as opposed to your personal journal, say, or a report you
are writing). Files stored in flash memory can be read but not changed,
although you can move files back and forth between the two types of
memory if you wish.

So, what else can you do with a Blazie notetaker? Access information
like time, date and appointments throughout the day as you please.
Switch between two different languages at the touch of a key. Use it as
the speech synthesizer for your computer. Create output in Braille or
print. With a modem, go on-line to send and receive e-mail, and surf
the Internet.

Let's elaborate on that "dual-language" feature. Series 2000 notetakers
have the ability to hold two separate language modules simultaneously.
It will switch between the two languages of your choice with a single
command. Language teachers, students, frequent travelers and others
imagine the uses of having two languages available at your fingertips!

A regular ink-printer will produce typewritten output when you use the
built-in Braille-to-print translation feature (with Braille 'n Speak or
Braille Lite). A just-added double-speed option lets you run searches
and the spell checker at twice normal speed. It also speeds up the way
some external programs will run. You'll work faster than ever before!

Truly, we are hard-pressed to think of anything you can't do with our
notetaker whether using it alone, or coupled with other computer
products. With our disk drive accessory, you can read IBM-compatible
disks. (What a handy way to read computerized books!) And with a
Braille Lite, you can read information in refreshable Braille, too.

Did we mention how easy Blazie notetakers are to use? In fact, you can
even upgrade your Series 2000 machine yourself. Not only is it that
simple, this also means that you don't have to return your notetaker to
us when software upgrades hit the market. How very smart!

Be sure to read the pages that follow to learn even more about these
marvelously capable, flexible, dependable little machines.

Our products are a best-selling choice among computer-savvy adults. Yet
their small size, rugged construction and ease of use make Series 2000
notetakers good tools even for young children. No previous computer
experience is necessary! Type 'n Speak users do not even have to know
Braille.

Let External Software Expand Your Series 2000 Options Even Further By
itself, your Series 2000 notetaker is an incredibly capable machine. But
when you add an inexpensive external program or two, you'll accomplish
even more.

Why not try one, or two, or three today? Free demos are available
on the World Wide Web at blazie.com. Or, call us for a demo disk.

Braille Lite 40
Braille Lite 40 goes beyond the features of the Series 2000 to give you
MORE computing power

Can you believe it? A machine with even more to offer the "power user"
than our Series 2000 notetaker? Yes, there is such a beauty, and it's
called Braille Lite 40.

The main differences lie in memory capabilities and in size of the
Braille display. Braille Lite 40 features a big 40 cells. Forty cells
means better access to screen layouts especially important in today's
graphical-oriented computing environment. The 40 convenient
cursor-routing buttons allow instant editing, and that means no more
tedious searches through text!

You may choose 6 or 8 dot Braille, as your application requires.
Additionally, there are keys to facilitate direct input of dot-7 and
dot-8 when entering ASCII Braille or foreign language notation.

It is hard to imagine, but the Braille Lite 40 comes equipped with an
absolute cavern of memory -- 768k RAM, plus an incredible 4mb flash ROM
memory. You can store up to 4,700 pages of Braille in over 1,000 files!
Put another way, Braille Lite 40 will hold the entire Holy Bible (both
the Old and New Testaments) with room to spare. So, you know this
notetaker can easily accept a book of almost any size. Load the text,
and read it in Braille at your leisure.

The Disk Drive Accessory
This device provides unlimited data storage on 3-1/2" disks

Think of the disk drive as a "data transfer station." With it, you can
save any file from your Blazie notetaker onto an ordinary diskette. Your
disk will be formatted in standard PC compatible files, and can now be
read by any IBM-compatible PC.

Some people simply transfer data for storage, or to back up file memory
on their Braille 'n Speak, Type 'n Speak, Braille Lite or Braille Lite
40.

Of course, you can use the disk drive to import data to your notetaker,
too. So, you can hear in synthesized speech any text file stored on
an IBM-compatible disk. That's a great way to read computerized books,
product manuals and more.

The disk drive is about the size and weight of a Braille 'n Speak, so it
is simple to take along on your daily travels.

You'll be up and working with your disk drive in no time. No previous
computer experience is necessary. Just plug the drive into your Blazie
notetaker. It has its own set of friendly, easy-to- use commands within
your Braille 'n Speak, Type 'n Speak or Braille Lite.

Improved Battery Life
Those who like to work while commuting, sitting outdoors or while
otherwise "unplugged" will love the enhanced battery system. You will
be able to work for 15 hours between charges!

Works Well With Other Serial Devices
By way of an optional cable, it is possible to run the disk drive from
any serial device. For example, if you have a Versa Braille, the disk
drive will work quite handily for you, too.

Another optional cable is made especially for use with The Reading Edge.

You can use any telecommunications program on your PC, such as PROCOMM
or TELIX, to send files to the disk drive accessory. ASCII files are
simple to transfer, too.

The Braille Blazer
Get the most for your money with this versatile, portable embosser

Forget any preconceived notions about big, loud or immobile Braille
embossers. The 12 lb. Braille Blazer is different! This combination of
true portability and unique engineering is so advanced, maybe we should
have named it "the Trailblazer."

You Get "Two for the Money"
When you purchase a Blazer, you actually get two machines in one.
First, of course, you get a dependable Braille embosser. The Blazer's
carry-along size allows it to handle paper up to 8-1/2" wide, in any
length.

It does an excellent job on regular computer paper, Braille paper and
even on smaller items such as tractor-fed index cards and labels.

Secondly, the Blazer functions well as a speech synthesizer for use with
any home, office or portable computer. It's easy - just combine your
favorite screen access and Braille translation software with the Blazer.

The result? A very capable speech system to see you through most any
workday situation.

The Blazer's built-in synthesized speech helps to keep the configuration
of your embosser a quick and simple process. You can even instruct the
Blazer to print "sideways" for spreadsheets and screen dumps.

You'll easily produce crisp, clear Braille graphics using the Blazer and
a software program such as EtgraphX (see page 45). Using the Graph-it
program, you can produce mathematical graphs, too! (See page 24.)

Three Material Weights to Match Your Needs
The Blazer has three embossing modes that you can select among, to meet
the needs of your task at hand.

Light paper mode gives you quality Braille on standard paper. It's the
choice you'll make for lists, proofreading, memos and other "throwaway"
applications.

Regular mode is for Braille paper.

Plastics mode was developed for the production of Braille signs and
labels on lightweight polymer materials.

The Braille Blazer accommodates many sizes of paper and plastics. It is
extremely versatile, because we know your needs and applications are
varied.

We've said it before, but excuse the repetition: the economical Braille
Blazer does so much, it may truly be the only embosser you will ever
need!

It was built with your budget in mind.

ASAW: Automatic Screen Access for Windows

Developed by MicroTalk, ASAW works with Windows 3.1, Windows for
Workgroups and Windows 95. The newest release of ASAW now supports
software-based speech synthesizers, such as Monologue 97 and Flextalk.

ASAW automatically announces text in collaboration with the application
you're running. So, there are no hard-coded actions for specific keys
instead, ASAW notes what is currently on-screen, then analyzes new
screen activity to decide what should be spoken.

It's simple to review text already on the screen. ASAW employs the
numeric keypad, at the right end of your keyboard, to do this. Just
press any of the screen access keys at any time, then resume with the
application's commands. ASAW knows that you are done looking at the
screen.

The review screen keys are simple and logical. A totally new user can
begin using applications within minutes of ASAW's installation without
having to learn the screen access program first.

MAJOR FEATURES

-ASAW supplies a method of moving, clicking and even dragging the mouse
pointer
-Tailor each application's speech behavior. Once you input your
preferences, those speech settings are retained for that application
from session to session
-State-of-the-art image recognition analysis lets you assign labels to
images. Plus, ASAW will recognize that image no matter where it appears,
so if you use a suite of programs, you only have to label the image one
time
-ASAW provides two different means of silencing speech. It's easy to skip
ahead right to the text of interest MicroTalk's cassette tutorial shows
you the best ways to effectively work in a graphical user environment.

If you use ASAP (see page 39), you'll be at ease with the command structure
of ASAW instantly.

throughout each year. A few of the larger ones include CSUN, Closing
the Gap, National Federation of the Blind, the Consumer Electronics
Show, ACB and the President's Committee on Employment of the
Handicapped.

We do attend many, many smaller shows throughout North America as well,
taking us from coast to coast and to lots of interesting places
in-between.

Blazie Engineering proudly and actively belongs to several organizations
that are doing work we feel is important. Some of these are the
National Federation of the Blind, the Electronic Industries Association
Assistive Devices Division, the Association for the Education and
Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired, AHEAD, ATA and LINC.

MegaDots
No matter how you like to work, MegaDots is receptive to your habits

The latest from Raised Dot Computing is MegaDots, Version 2.0. It
offers better Braille, easier customization and several important new
features. This flexible, intuitive translator frees you from the
complexities of Braille and computers. Every element of the Braille is
under your supervision, even if you don't know any Braille at all.

MegaDots works with 95 different file formats, including Mac files, so
you can easily import and translate most any document likely to cross
your desk. With MegaDots, what you see on-screen is what you get on
paper. (This is also true if you work in Braille.) Whenever you want to
see how the Braille is coming along, just press the Translate key. You
can skip around, edit, or enter more Braille.

Data entry can be done using a six-key technique, or as "inkprint in
Braille" where words are translated into Braille as you enter them.

For sighted users, MegaDots has a familiar look and feel. Pull-down
menus, point-and-click mouse control and colorful screens make working a
pleasure. You can view the Braille itself in one of five display modes,
and since MegaDots features Perfect Round Trip Translation, you can move
between print and Braille easily when you need to. Your document
remains free of "translation-induced" errors.

Easy Launch From Windows

MegaDots works on IBM compatibles with a 286 processor or better and at
least 640k RAM.
You need DOS 3.3 or higher. Although MegaDots is a DOS program, it can
launch from Windows and can read and write Windows file formats.

"Smart" Spell Checker Included

Unlike ordinary spell checkers, this one is revolutionary in its ability
to correct the visual mistakes sometimes produced by optical scanners.

The spell checker is simple to operate, especially when working in voice
or refreshable Braille, because you are not trapped in a menu. Better
still, it uses the identical commands employed in normal reading and
editing.

Improved Document Importer

MegaDots looks at your imported files and decides the best styles to
assign for headings, paragraphs and other items. With Version 2.0, this
process is both faster and smarter it's highly automated, yet at your
control. Cleaning up your text is much faster and easier, because
MegaDots makes better judgements about formatting in the first place.

The new importer is also better at interpreting graphic elements such as
borders, running headers or footers, etc.

Need to read or create Web sites (HTML code)? MegaDots' importing has
gotten better in this area, too.

New Inkprint Features

Large print readers will find their horizons greatly expanded. For
example, you can create a document with any size print, from 14 to 72
point. Also, select a variety of options for inkprint Braille viewing.
Proofreading for Braille transcribing is even easier, because you can
place inkprint dots and printed words together however you like best.

=Choose Braille in Grade 1, Grade 2, Computer Braille Code or Linear Braille

Braille 'n Speak Teaching Curriculum
Brand-new this year, we introduce a nationally field-tested curriculum
designed for teachers who may be new to the Braille 'n Speak. Produced
in an easy-to-use, large-print format, the curriculum contains seven
major sections, from Getting Started to Advanced Features and Functions.

The comprehensive, well-sequenced series of lessons allows even young
children or newly-blinded individuals to "jump right in" to the use of
notetakers and Braille. This is done by carefully controlling the
vocabulary and the number of Braille contractions used. In fact, any
student can perform all 32 lessons in the curriculum if he or she knows:

the letters of the alphabet
the 23 whole-word contractions (but, can, do, from, every, etc.)
the initial whole-word, part-word contractions (the, of, with, for, and)
some basic punctuation

Authored by Bryan J. Blazie, Blazie Engineering vice president, and
Jamie Dote-Kwan, Ph.D. in special education, each lesson includes a
purpose statement, a student-based outcome objective, a sequence of
step-by-step illustrated instructions, and a clearly-designed quick
reference chart. The lessons can be taught using any model of Braille 'n
Speak or Braille Lite.

An information-rich set of appendices and a Braille 'n Speak competency
test round out the picture. Stay-flat binding, 113 pages.

its soft, roomy comfort during those long days in the conference booth.

You'll just call it "great" as you notice details like the
seven-button placket front, two-button cuffs, and double-needle
stitching on the collar and side-seams. There is a handy left-breast
pocket, while on the right you'll find the same good-looking Blazie
emblem as featured on our Mid-weight Jacket. Comes in teal green with
tortoise-shell buttons. Imported. Machine wash and dry.

BAT Personal Keyboard

A compact seven-key unit makes one-hand touch typing possible

The BAT Personal Keyboard is a remarkable, efficient device that is
especially attractive for its adaptive qualitites. Using the BAT,
people with good use of only one hand and the ability to learn a simple
input system can fully access the standard computer keyboard.

Although BAT does not utilize the standard Braille keyboard, data is
entered via chording: that is to say, by pressing combinations of keys
simultaneously. It's easy, too. Most people learn the alphabet and
numbers in about one hour.

Your hand rests naturally on the built-in wrist pad, fingers over the
four "home" keys and your thumb over the three thumb keys. Very little
hand or arm movement is required.

The BAT is lightweight, compact and flexible. Use it alone, in pairs,
or in combination with other devices (such as a traditional keyboard or
a mouse).

Just plug the BAT into the keyboard port of your computer...and begin to
enjoy the advantages of a free hand!

We will be here if you call us for help
If you're new to Blazie Engineering products and services, you'll be
glad to know that providing dependable, accessible technical support is
a big part of our business philosophy.

We know that sometimes even the slickest product manual or the largest
help file can't assist you the way a real, live person can. That's a
simple fact of life in the age of computers. So, earlier this year we
boosted our telephone tech support availability by 33%.

Live Phone Support 12 Hours a Day

Customers with questions about anything in our product line can call
410-893-9333 between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. (eastern
time), Monday through Friday. We are always glad to explain product
functions or solve other puzzles. Help is available in English or
Spanish.

Our Fax Line Never Closes

Our fax machine can be reached at 410-836-5040. It is set up to receive
transmissions continuously. If you want to write down your questions,
or sketch a diagram that might help us to diagnose your problem, then
faxing is a quick way to go.

Help is Just a Keystroke Away

Plenty of technical assistance is available on-line, for the growing
number of people connected to the Internet. Even if you have just
simple e-mail access, you can log on, communicate with us and learn a
lot. It's all described below.

World Wide Web
As mentioned on page 35, our Internet home page is a fantastic source of
information of all kinds. You can download files, look through our
catalog, link to other blindness-related sites, post your own comments,
and more. The address is: http://www.blazie.com/.

E-mail Discussion Groups
Referred to as "mailing lists," these forums give users the chance to
talk not only to us, but to other customers as well, about anything
related to Blazie Engineering. Have a question about one of our
products? Post it here and you'll get a lot of good feedback.

Also, you can leave public messages for us. Our support folks check the
list practically every business day, and will respond here so that
others can benefit from their replies.

To get started, just send e-mail to this address: listproc@blazie.com.
Leave the subject line blank. (If your server mandates that something
be written in the subject line, go ahead and fill in a short word. The
listproc software will just disregard it.)

For your message, write just one line: subscribe support-list firstname
lastname.

Once you've subscribed using the above procedure, you will be able to
send a message to support-list@blazie.com. You might put in the subject
line, Disk Drive Question. In minutes, the entire mailing list
membership will have received your message and can respond to it.
Likewise, you will get every message questions and answers sent by
others on the list.

We also maintain an announce list which contains information about
products, pricing, upgrades, etc. Send mail to the same address above,
that is: listproc@blazie.com (which is not a person, but an automated
computer here). This time, for your message, write: subscribe announce
firstname lastname.

These mailing lists are free and you can unsubscribe at any time.

Personal E-mail
Nearly every Blazie employee has an e-mail address. Usually, it is the
person's first name, then the at-sign, then blazie.com. For example,
write to David Goldfield by typing: david@blazie.com. If you want to ask
a question "at-large," use the address support@blazie.com. E-mail is a
great way to get answers at your convenience, and it is more private
than using the discussion forums.

File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
The Internet's FTP allows you to receive files from systems all over the
world. We have a server, and you can get to it by writing ftp@blazie.com
from your Internet account.

At the log-in prompt, write ftp for your user name, and write your
e-mail address as your password. Now you can dial into our system to
receive files. Our manuals can all be found here, as well as demo
software for things like Checkbook and Easy-Braille programs.

For More Information
To find out more about the many ways to receive our technical help and
company information, please call us during the workday at 410-893-9333.
We'll get you set up, and you'll always be in the know regarding what's
new at Blazie Engineering.
